Historical Overview

The in-game SSG 08 is directly based on the real-world Steyr SSG 08 (Scharfschützengewehr 2008), an Austrian bolt-action sniper rifle developed by Steyr Mannlicher. Introduced in 2008, it was designed with input from Austria's elite EKO Cobra counter-terrorism unit. It is an evolution of the earlier SSG 04, featuring a high-quality cold hammer-forged barrel, a folding aircraft-grade aluminum stock, and Steyr's proprietary Safe Bolt System (SBS). Chambered in rounds like 7.62×51mm NATO (.308 Winchester) or .338 Lapua Magnum, it is prized for its sub-MOA precision and lightweight ergonomics — characteristics that directly inform its role in Counter-Strike as the highly mobile, fast-peeking "Scout".
